Constraints on Absolute Magma Chamber Volume From Geodetic Measurements of Trapdoor Faulting at Sierra Negra Volcano, Galapagos

چکیده
Magma chamber volume is critical for volcano hazards assessment and forecasting. Standard geodetic methods constrain change, not the total volume. Here, we show that deformation response of magma to trapdoor faulting events at Sierra Negra volcano, Galapagos, depends on product absolute compressibility. Bubble-free provides lower limit compressibility, thus an upper bound 13.6–20.6 km3, depending fault dip. We estimate compressibility using a conduit model relating volatile content lava fountain height, compared with observations from 2005 eruption, constrained by olivine melt inclusions. This yields roughly half bound. find best fitting near-vertical; reverse dips are slightly favored (88°).

Constraints on Magma Chamber Geometry at Sierra Negra Volcano, Galápagos Islands, based on InSAR Observations
We investigate the problem of estimating magma chamber geometry using InSAR observations of Sierra Negra volcano, Galápagos. Ascending and descending interferograms are combined to determine vertical and one horizontal component of displacement. The ratio of maximum horizontal to vertical displacement suggests a sill-like source. Spherical or stock-like bodies are inconsistent with the data. We...
متن کاملGeodetic constraints on the shallow magma system at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat
[1] Ground surface tilts recorded proximal to a growing lava dome, and sustained through repeated dome collapses, provide unique geodetic constraints on the depth, size, and overpressures of the shallow magmatic system at Soufrière Hills Volcano. Tilt records identify a single pressure-source inflating with periods 3–30 h. Sustained tilt amplitude ratios for paired stations identify the pressur...
متن کاملForecasting magma-chamber rupture at Santorini volcano, Greece
How much magma needs to be added to a shallow magma chamber to cause rupture, dyke injection, and a potential eruption? Models that yield reliable answers to this question are needed in order to facilitate eruption forecasting. Development of a long-lived shallow magma chamber requires periodic influx of magmas from a parental body at depth. This redistribution process does not necessarily caus...

[1] Using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) measurements of the surface deformation at Fernandina Volcano, Galápagos (Ecuador), acquired between January 2003 and September 2010, we study the structure and the dynamics of the shallow magmatic system of the volcano. Through the analysis of spatial and temporal variations of the measured line-of-sight displacement we identify multip...
متن کاملDeep magma transport at Kilauea volcano, Hawaii
The shallow part of Kilauea’s magma system is conceptually well-understood. Long-period and short-period (brittle-failure) earthquake swarms outline a near-vertical magma transport path beneath Kilauea’s summit to 20 km depth. A gravity high centered above the magma transport path demonstrates that Kilauea’s shallow magma system, established early in the volcano’s history, has remained fixed in...
